Welcome to KHOJ: The search to know our roots and understand the meaning of our existence.

Prejudice is the biggest problem in the society. It can be it in terms of religion, cast, sex, skin-colour, status etc. Prejudice can also be in form of the feeling that human beings are the greatest creation, or even patriotism about artificially created borders. The motto of KHOJ is to gain knowledge and break that prejudice. But there is a word of caution for the readers. To break the prejudice KHOJ might throw upon you the concepts it believes in. If the reader believes on KHOJ’s perception without question, then KHOJ itself might incept a prejudice in the readers mind thus failing in it own motto. KHOJ is trying to break its own world of prejudice, but at times that prejudice might get reflected in its writing. Please do challenge them.

MIND OF GOD DECODED - Being Alive

In the last post THE ILLUSION we have seen how lucky you are that you exist. However, from the quantum perspective, all possibilities exist at the same time, and hence it is not a miracle that you are here and reading this post, because in one of those possibilities you had to. So, next time when you are sad, just remember that there is another you somewhere, who is very very happy at that same time. We also saw that we do not know what is real, but we do know that what we think is real is not real! And, like all frequencies adds up to zero, all possible you (including all the you(s) made of antimatter), and all possible universes, adds up to no you and no universe at all. So, nothing exists, and all that exits in just an illusion.

Staying within the realm of illusion we can clearly distinguish between two things, one that we think are non-living, and the others whom we call as living. The distinction is so clear that even a child can recognise it. But, remember, when we call something as non-living, it is an interpretation of the data gathered through our senses. We know that are senses are incomplete and flawed. So, any interpretation of a flawed data is bound to be flawed.

MIND OF GOD DECODED - The Illusion

Homo sapiens’s quest to decode the mind of god is as old as Homo sapiens themselves. Since the dawn of time they have tried to unravel the mysteries of nature. Their existence in itself is nothing short of a miracle. What are the odds that billions of tiny, apparently mindless strings, vibrating in their own unique frequencies, totally unaware of you, combine in the perfect formation to form the complex you? Very, very less! Isn’t it a lucky coincidence that you exist and is here right now, reading this blog? Khoj welcomes the lucky you in this journey to the centre of god’s mind through a series of post “Mind of God Decoded”. This is the first in the series where we are going to deal with the illusion of our existence. Are we unique? Do we really exist? Or is it just a cosmic illusion called Maya?

INCREDIBLE INDIA - Bhopal and the March of Indian Civilization

The first thing that comes to mind when one talks of Bhopal is the disaster that occurred in the winter of ’84. It was one of the worst industrial disasters in history. But Bhopal, situated in the northwestern part of Madhya Pradesh at the heart of India, is about more than just the disaster. It is a charming city that will remind you of the glamorous lifestyle led by the Nawabs and Begums.

THE HYPOCRITE

– Written by an unrepentant oil geologist

He wore his favourite dress, sprayed his favourite perfume, today was a good day. The candle light dinner he had last night with the girl of his dream was still lingering in his mind. But that can wait, today he have to focus on the seminar he was about to give. He knew that it was the golden opportunity he was waiting for. It was time to bring his life back on track.

First seed of India-Pakistan Partition - The Legend of the Indus

This is not the story of partition but the story of the legend of a river, of the immoral saint who guided Alexander the great in the latter’s quest for immortality. It is the story, probably of the first seed, that ultimately resulted in the partition of India and Pakistan. Being over thousand years, the story has evolved. A hero became legend and legend turned into myth. There are many versions to the story, what I have written here is a compilation from some of those tales.

SIZE ZERO

“Mirror mirror on the wall, tell me who is the slimmest?” That is what a modern girl asks her mirror. Yes, thin is in, at least for the people with money. The trend fortunately has not caught up with the less fortunate ones. If you ask your maid they will still say, just like your mom, that thin makes you look sick. But that is not how most teenagers think. It is size zero that makes them look sexy, just like their fashion icons. There are many successful models whose body fat is much below the healthy 22-26%. The craze of size zero made models Luisel Ramos and Ana Carolina Reston starve themselves to death (heard of Anorexia nervosa?). The craze also got into actresses like Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, Keira Knightly, Mischa Barton, Kareena Kapoor and now Katrina Kaif. But girls, really, is it worth it?

INCREDIBLE INDIA - Easter in Kasauli...

Sunday, 24th April, was a sad day for the devotees of Satya Sai Baba. He was an enigmatic spiritual leader whose life had its share of controversies and fame. His death shocked many, including Sachin who did not celebrate his birthday which fell on the same day. While the day was sad for some, it was celebration time for many followers of another faith, because it was this day when their spiritual leader was resurrected. It was the time of Easter bunny and her eggs. Eggs and bunnies (female rabbit can conceive while already pregnant and gives birth to lots of litters) are symbols of fertility representing harvest time since antiquity.  April is also the harvest time for Indians. Vaisakhi is a harvest festival celebrated throughout India, especially in the North and East. It also represents the first year in Hindu calendar. So it was time for celebration, and what better way to celebrate than spending the long weekend in the Himalayas. Our destination was Kasauli – a welcome break from the heat of Delhi.

KHOJ to know our root – Where it all began!

It all began more than 30million years ago, ~200kms below the surface, at a temperature of 1500°C, somewhere under the Mountain of Moon. That was where a dangerous force was unleashed that changed the world forever. The heat, 200kms below the earth (geologists calls it magma plume), was slowly tearing Africa apart (rifting). The force that was soon going to change the history was first changing the geography of East Africa. The landscape slowly evolved into The Great African Rift Valley. It created deep lakes like Lake Tanganyika that is 1470m deep, to high mountains like the 5109m tall Mt. Rwenzori within next 20 million years. The high mountains blocked the clouds creating a rain shadow in the eastern part of Africa making it more arid. A kilometer reduction of topography would have meant I would not have been here to write this post, the world would have been lot greener, and no one would have been there to worry about global warming.

The day I met the TERRORIST

That day started like any other day. Seldom did I know that in few hours my uncomplicated life was going to transform forever. The drama that was going to unfold would break my monotonous routine and give my life a brand new meaning. Call it chance or call it fate, but it happened on 24th September 2008, the day I met the" terrorist".

WOMEN can never be EQUAL to MEN

Okay… I am going to land myself into a big time controversy here. I firmly believe that women can never be equal to men. If you think otherwise…think again…I am going to prove all of you wrong in this post. If you are a man…enjoy reading and boost your male ego. If you are a woman…do you really want to read this post and embarrass yourself? If you have the guts then go through it and I challenge you to prove me wrong.

INDIA - The Land of Miracles

From Poonam Pandey to World Cup to ANNA HAZARE to the Indian YOUTH....A night with ANNA

India is a country of miracles. I am not talking about our democracy that miraculously lasted for over 60yrs. What I am talking about is real miracles, miracles like saints floating in air (surprisingly always in front of a black background) or doing a Jesus by walking on water. It is a country where children are born not by sex but by pouring water (milk even better) over the Shivalinga. It is not the performance of the 11 in the field that won India the World Cup but the miracles, also called ‘desi totkas’, performed by the billion Indians (as if our own miracle boy Rajni’s gracious presence was not enough). One of our office colleague claims to have taken 4 Sri Lankan wickets just by going to toilet! He had to endure the pain of drinking excess water throughout the Sri Lankan innings. Another one sat for two hours on the uncomfortable edge of his comfortable sofa even as his legs became uncomfortably numb. That is just two out of the billion Indians doing their own little miracles for the cup… Sri Lanka had no chance.

INDIA vs CHINA

2nd April 2011, a day Indians will remember as the day they became the superpower of world cricket, a day they won the World Cup. 1.2 billion Indians all around the globe erupted out of pure ecstasy. The roar could be heard from Hyderabad to Houston. It was one night when Eid, Diwali and Holi were celebrated at the same time. It was a moment when the patriotic emotions overflowed, a moment when entire India became one. The echoes will be heard for days. But alas, it won’t last for long. Soon the energies will subside and India will return to normalcy. The dividers of region, status, caste, creed and sex, which were once drowned under joy, will re-emerge. India will never be able to become a political superpower unless it learns to hold on to that moment of pure bliss when they became the cricket superpower. In our post “ENTER THE DRAGON” we had a look at the magnificent dragon. In the next post “INCREDIBLE INDIA” we saw the multi-faceted elephant. The dragon is miles ahead in the race to become the next superpower. But the race is far from being over yet. The elephant can give the dragon a run for its money, if only it changes few things.

What Future Beholds?

Human beings have always been fascinated about predicting the future. It is the want to know the uncertain future that have given rise to astrology. These bipedal creatures have always been fascinated by Nostradamus and his Les Propheties. Scientists, philosophers and mystics have all tried their luck, but predicting the future is neither a black magic nor a solid science. It is a projection of past history into the future. KHOJ has so far tried to understand the past but have also promised to anticipate the future. This post is an attempt towards that.

INCREDIBLE INDIA!!!!

She is young…yet so old
She is rude…she is nice
She is coward…yet so bold
She is crazy…she is wise

She is peace…she is fight
She is boring…she is fun
She is wrong…she is right
She is many…she is ONE

Yes…she is the one-and-only India…INCREDIBLE INDIA! Just like its cricket team, she will surprise you in a pleasant way when you least expect it, and will disappoint when your expectations are sky high. She is an enigma, a puzzle that no one can solve. There is no one word that describes an Indian. There is more difference between people of Chennai and Bengal than between England and Spain. In fact, there was no India. It has always been divided into smaller kingdoms. There was only three phase of India’s history when major part of the vast sub-continent came under one powerful rule. It was during the rule of Ashoka, Akbar and then under the British. India has been a mixture of different cultures each having its own unique identity. Read on to unravel the puzzle......

ENTER THE DRAGON

The economies of two ancient Asian civilizations of India and China dominated the world for centuries. Around 750 BC that power shifted west to the Islamic civilizations of Middle East. A thousand years later the power shifted further west as the industrialized European Imperialism spread round the globe. The last century saw the power shifting west again to America. In turn of the century it seems like the global power has completed its full circle and is shifting back to Asia. The Asian giants China and India are preparing for the race to become the next global superpower. Who is going to win? Will it be the swift and powerful Chinese Dragon, or will it be the slow and lazy Indian Elephant? This post is about the Dragon....i will deal with our special elephant in another post....

SEX

See, I got your attention! I can see your eyes lit up when you saw the word SEX. This three letter word attracts people like magnets. That is the power of the word; it makes the world go round. Now that you are here, I won’t disappoint you, let’s talk sex.

Birds do it, bees do it, and humans since the dawn of time have done it.”

The Credit for the Great Eurasian Civilization goes to....PLATE TECTONICS!

Surprised? Once you go through this post you won’t be! As I mentioned in my last post, I love to relate history with geology, and that is exactly what I am going to do here. At first it seems like there is no link between the two widely different subjects- History and Geology. However, when we take a closer look we do see that geology – the history of earth – has influenced the history of mankind ever since the species was born. We know how tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes and floods have affected our lives. Had there been no Himalayas to source the rivers of Indus and Ganges, the great ancient Indian civilizations would have never existed. But what I am speaking about in this post has much greater influence in shaping our history. Had the orientations of our landmasses, shaped by plate tectonics, been different, the history of mankind would have been totally different. A slight reorientation of plates and it would have been the Africans, and not the Europeans, leading the world.

From Huntress to Seductress - History of the Fairer Sex

Women are often the hidden half of history, while men dominated the public arena. Since antiquity, women had silently left their mark on the world, and at times changed it. Not many people know that it was a Chinese empress named Xilingshi who invented sericulture around 3000BC that made China a world power; the first named author was a lady named En Hedu’anna, a high priestess of Moon God in Ur who lived around 2300BC; there was a entire kingdom in Northern India, called ‘Strirajya’, that was ruled by women for over thousand years; the world’s first computer programmer, Ada, was a girl. Before the beginning of agriculture, in the stone-age, women were not just food gatherers, but also huntresses. These women were not only giving company to their Adam’s, but doing much more. There are stone-age paintings preserved in Kashmir which revealed that women went together with men for hunting. They danced together in the beats of the ancient drums. These huntresses of the lithic era shared equal status with men, and may be even regarded as superior. The first god human beings worshiped was the Great Mother. Among the first human images discovered are the "Venus figures," that date back to Upper Paleolithic period between 35,000 and 10,000 BC. We can still hear the echoes of the beats in which these free women danced, when we see the cave paintings in Bhimbetka (Madhya Pradesh, India). But the status of modern women is only a shadow of their past.

God and Glory - Part 3: The Post Axial Age

Post Axial Age saw the clash of civilizations as big empires and religions fought for supremacy. From internal and spiritual growth, people became more focused on worship as frequent wars bred insecurity. It was also the beginning of an era where polytheism gave way to monotheism. Worship of one god appealed to masses and made religion accessible to more human beings. Two of the most popular religion in the world, Christianity (29-32% of world population) and Islam (19-23%), began in this era. Both these religions are monotheist religions. The only old religions that are still flourishing are Hinduism (14-17%) and Buddhism (7-18%). The probable reason for them to survive is because they evolved. This post is not meant to hurt anyone's sentiments, but reveal an honest and unbiased  history of God that includes true stories of great men like Jesus and Mohammad.

God and Glory - Part 2: The Axial Age

Part 2: Axial Age

Cultures of pre-Axial age seems to have develop world-wide in a connected fashion. The world was divided into three classes - the rulers or tribal kings, chiefs and priests; the middle class or the demos which included the peasants and merchants; and the slaves. The ruling class grew rich while the demos and slaves grew poorer. These ancient people were fighting more with nature than with themselves, and hence their natural choice of gods was based on nature. 8th century BC was a period of great changes in human civilisation. At several places the demos, especially the merchant class, grew in power. The world became 'more' demo-cratic, however there was no improvement in the condition of slaves. The idea of god evolved with the changing society. It was a time when the intellectual idea of god reached its peak, only to be downgraded later to a more rigid philosophy of worship.

In the beginning there were no great emperors, but states or villages. The democratic states of Greece and village republic of India reduced the power of chiefs and tribal kings. New cities were build, by destroying forests. Great dynasties and empires grew all over the world. Chou dynasty ruled in China. The Neo-Assyrian Empire reached its peak power conquering the Kingdom of Israel as well as nearby countries. Greece colonized other regions of the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea. Rome was founded in 753 BC, and the Etruscan Civilization expanded to Italy. The first Olympiad was set at 776 BC. This rapid and mammoth cultural development required huge amount of constructions, and thus, masculine power. This resulted in decrease in the status of females in the society. While men went to work and conquer the world, their female counterparts got restricted in their house taking care of their family and concentrating more on their beauty to please the powerful males. Survival was no more just about making babies, but about winning wars. The fertility goddesses were thus replaced by the powerful male gods.

In the later part of Axial age the first experiment with democracy took a backseat and bigger empires began to form. Religion became part of the politics either to promote harmony or war. In 550 BC Cyrus the Great conquered Medes and formed the Persian Empire under the Achaemenid dynasty. Even though he was set to conquer the world, he respected all religions. After defeating the Babylonians he did not impose the Persian gods on his new subjects but restored the effigies of gods belonging to the people conquered by Babylonians. He permitted the Jews to return to Judah and rebuild their temple. Cyrus believed, or wanted his subjects to believe, that god has charged him with the task. Two centuries later Alexander the Great defeated the mighty Persian Empire and dreamt of ruling the world in the name of God. After defeating the hill tribes of Pirsar he ordered his men to build alters to Athena, the patron of war. Athena was Achilles special protector, and Alexander thought of himself as Achilles physical decendent through his mother's family. He called himself the son of Zeus. A century later Ashoka the Great ruled almost whole of India and even part of central Asia. In the tenth year of his rein (254 BC) after defeating all his enemies, Ashoka (as per Buddhist texts) converted to Buddhism and started preaching non-violence. Ashoka was instrumental in promoting Buddhism around Asia.

With the development of socio-economic conditions, intellectual and spiritual development started to take place. The Vedic period of India made way for the Upanishads marking the beginning of Vedanta philosophy. This highly intellectual and spiritual philosophy focused on the deeper understanding of desire and destiny. God, from being a separate entity, became part of all living beings. The main figure in the Upanishads is the sage Yajnavalkya whose teachings influenced later Hindu and Buddhist philosophy. He taught the great doctrine of "neti-neti", the view that truth can be found only through the negation of all thoughts about it. At the same time, around 6th century BC, Buddha, aka Siddhartha Gautama, taught in north eastern part of Indian sub-continent. His teachings helped people achieve nirvana and escape the cycle of suffering and rebirth. Buddhism is a non-theistic religion that taught, unlike other religions, that believing in gods was not necessary to attain enlightment. Buddhism spread out of India into greater part of Asia, especially China. Similar religious revolution also took place in China in the form of Taoism and Confucianism in 5th century. Tao or “way” (of life) emphasized on compassion, moderation and humility. Taoist thought focuses on nature, the relationship between humanity and the cosmos, health and longevity, and" wu wei" (action through inaction), which is thought to produce harmony with the Universe. Note the connection between Indian "neti neti" and Chinese "wu wei" philosophy. At the same time Chinese philosopher Confucius (Kǒng Fūzǐ, or K'ung-fu-tzu, lit. "Master Kong", 551–478 BC) taught his complex moral, social, political, philosophical, and quasi-religious ideas. The basic philosophy being that human beings are improvable and perfectible through personal and communal endeavors, especially including self-cultivation and self-creation.

Closer home in Iran the Zoroastrian religion was founded by a priest named Zoroaster. From the little we know about Zoroaster’s life, he was born into Spitama clan and was probably a Vedic Brahmin priest. However he rejected the pagan way of life and worshiped monotheist god Ahura Mazda. He also opposed the animal sacrifices, drinking of Somaras and the rigid caste system. His ideas were not accepted quickly, and he had only one convert, his cousin. As expected, he got opposition from the local religious authorities. After twelve years he left home and went westwards. He was accepted by King Vishtaspa who made Zoroastrism the official religion of his kingdom. Zoroaster later died in his late 70s [2], but his religion spread far and wide. The philosophy of the Devas spread East, all enemies became Asura. The philosophy of Ahura spread West, and all their enemies became Daevas.

Further west in Greece, in 6th century BC, rational philosophies developed. Logical ideas replaced mythologies. Instead of looking into the internal world like in Asia, these new philosophers investigated the ultimate basis and essential nature of the external world. They sought the material principle (archê) of things, and the method of their origin and disappearance. Thales was the first of these philosophers who started the Milesian school. The practical side of philosophy was introduced by Pythagoras of Samos (582-496 BCE). Regarding the world as perfect harmony, dependent on number, he aimed at inducing humankind likewise to lead a harmonious life. Pythagoras’s idea inspired many western philosophers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. The ideas of these early philosophers led to the development of mathematics and physics, and thus helped in growth of science, which would later rise against the powerful might of god. But the road would not be an easy one. Many logical thinkers, like Socrates, would be sentenced to death for daring to go against religion.

A different type of religious development took place in Middle East. Yahweeh [YHWH] subdued all other gods and goddesses and became the sole god of the descendents of Prophet Abraham (1800-1500 BC). It marked the end of Goddess’s Golden Age and beginning of modern monotheist religions. YHWH was the god who, according to Bible, sends Moses to save the slaves who were descendents of Abraham. His first temple was constructed by Solomon, king of the ancient Israelites, on mount Moriah, also known as Mount Zion in Jerusalem. It housed the Ark of the Covenant and functioned as a religious focal point in ancient Judaism for the worship of God. The temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 587 or 586 BC. The Second Temple was subsequently built ca. 515 BC. It was also destroyed again and subsequently restored under the rule of Herod the Great (37 BCE-4 CE) and, because of this, the restored Second Temple is also known as "Herod's Temple." The Roman legions under the leadership of Titus set fire to the Second Temple in 70 CE, burning it to the ground and destroying it completely. Jewish eschatology includes the belief that a Third Temple will also be built on Mount Moriah.

It is YHWH, the god of Jews, who will later become the god of Jesus and Mohammad, and Mount Moriah will continue to be a sacred place for Jews, and later for Christians and Muslims alike. In the next section we will see the birth of Christianity and Islam, and how these religions will set out to conquer the world. We will see how the other religions react to the onslaught, and how science slowly, but surely, replaces religion. However, the fight still continues till today, a fight to restore the image of god back to the days of its past glory.
